You must have missed the rest of this story.
She was swimming to safety not for herself, but to try to get help to
her 5 year old son who was dying from asthma-related breathing
problems.

Because no one had come to rescue them in 4 days.

I agree wholeheartedly that anyone able to help themselves should, but
there are people who really needed timely help that did not get it.
