Walk where? There's definitely a herd mentality at work, no doubt, but options were slim. Stay here at the convention center (where everybody else is and, presumably, where aid will come first) or strike off hobo-style down a road (any road) to... where? You've got little or no money, few possessions, perhaps are injured or dealing with children or elderly and you head off to... where? Down the road? Is that the road where they don't charge for food? Or is it that one? Is that the avenue where anybody that wants one gets a clean bed? >From the convention center you'd only have to walk what, 100 miles or so, before you started to reach areas not devastated by the storm. And then it would be easy to ask strangers on the street to put you up for the night and feed your family - people are good that way.
