I think there needs to be a thorough inquiry and not by George Bush. I think there needs to be a comprehensive national discussion about disaster planning and I think there should be a clear-cut plan and chain of authority. I think that the media need to do some serious soul-searching. Those pictures of looters... did an incredible amount of harm to race relations in this country and were not even what was important. I saw an article in the paper, can't find a link right now, that was talking about a woman who called CNN to say that her brother was up to his neck in water and did not have tools to get out. CNN made sympathetic noises. Governor Blanco was watching and had to call to say WHERE IS HE. Doh. It was a Scripps-Howard news analysis I think, and it made some very good points. There should have been a crawl saying where food was being delivered, where the Red Cross trcks were, where the medical workers were, etc etc etc. That was what mattered. Reality TV has taken over our news so it is hard for some people to realize that yes, that really is a woman trying to get six toddlers through eight feet of water. That guy running out of oxygen relaly is going to die. And so on. I think a lot of people are seeing this as something like a drama rather than picturing themselves in that position. We need to rediscover empathy.
