It's all about being tough.

Matthew Small

That reminds me of one of my favorite stories from my mother. When she was a
young newly wed, she and my dad where traveling. She had a need for a
bathroom, so they pulled into a Phillips 66 gas station. The clerk would not
let her use the bathroom without a purchase, "company policy." She informed
the clerk that she would pick up the phone, make a call to her mother-in-law
who saw the CEO of Phillips everyday, and have her discuss the "policy" with
him. Interestingly the clerk immediately handed over the bathroom key. It was
even true that she could do this, as my grandmother was the operator of the
executive elevator for the Phillips 66 headquarters building. Saw all the top
executives every day. :-)
