The argument for it goes like this:

Schools (or stadiums) provide a public good and you benefit from it. 
The better educated the population the more access you'll have to low
cost goods.  Take a recent kids' soccer game I went to:  All of the
kids arrived in Mini-vans or SUVs, had uniforms and all of the parents
had sun tents, backpack coolers, party chairs, and video cameras.  And
this was in a middle class to lower middle class area.

That's a hell of a lot different when I was kid and had to cut through
yards and wear my own "play" clothes.

The point being there's a lot more wealth here today that 20 years ago
and part of that are due to these public good expenses.

That being said, I fully agree when it comes to stadiums.  The last
thing I want to subsidize is sex parties for criminals.
