I've lived in this part of the world for 29 years... There has, to date,
never been a blizzard here that has caused any significant damage in
that time. Now... That leaves 71 additional years in this century... So
ask me in 2076 if I still feel safe. :) The worst thing that's
happened... Is I've had to take a shovel and dig out the 3 feet of snow
from behind my car that a front end loader dumped at the end of my
driveway when clearing the streets! ARGH!

A quick mapquest search and it would appear that I live 1229 miles/1978
kilometres from Yellowstone... So I'm still feeling rather secure.

It's funny... I guess I don't think of blizzards as being a big deal.
They typically only last from a few hours to a day or so... And
afterward the entire city is blanketed in pretty, clean, white snow...
It's very peaceful.

You are describing your average normal blizzards that happen every year.
The one that does the damage is the once in a century blizzard that
dumps so much snow that buildings may collapse and you may be trapped
longer then the food supply in your house can last. But, not being
close to water does make these rare.

On another note, you may not be as safe from Volcanoes as you think. I
watched a Discovery show about the volcanic activity that is Yellowstone
National Park (US). It is a volcano that has erupted a few times in the
past, and geologists feel it is just a matter of time before it does it
again. When it does, it could produce so much ash that a 1000 mile
radius around it could be covered with enough ash that buildings would
collapse and humans without protective masks could breathe deadly
quantities of ash into their lungs.

Now this may happen in our life times or 1000 years or more from now,
but when it happens it's going to be a dozy.
