It is lose-lose for them. They are probably just fishing. Talk some strong language, send out a letter from some lawyer with some scary language in it just to see if Ray will cave and come up with some money. If he stands his ground they will the just write it off. Only costs a little time and effort to get quite a few people who will pay just because the communication sounds official and scary.
