My father would (in my opinion, correctly) argue that you are always making an
impression on people. And an impression that 'I couldn't care less because you
guys aren't important' isn't the one I'd like to step forward with.

A story to illustrate my point:

I was taking the Canadian Safety Council motorcycle safety course a few years
ago, which includes 1 week of instruction out on the road on the bikes and 1
day in a classroom mid-week. On the classroom day we went around and
introduced ourselves with our names and what we do for a living.

My jaw dropped to the floor when I realized I'd been taking the class all week
with a man who owned the company I'd been contracted to for the year prior.
I'd only ever dealt with his employees and never with him, though he certainly
was aware of me and the work I was doing... in addition to signing the cheques.

What kind of impression would I have given this very important client had I
been at the course in ripped clothes or cursing or acting with disrespect... or
even just being careless?

In any event, not trying to harp, just reminded me that you never know who is
important and who isn't.
