For some believers (including all those who subscribe to a religion) it is the literal word that's true and no contradictions from other sources are allowed. That is until recently with the Dali Lama said in the DC area that where the sacred texts and science conflict, science is right. He has also stated his belief that modern science takes precedence over ancient religions.
