My dog is a lab mix, and we are able to just fill up her bowl, and she eats
only when she's hungry, and doesnt' gorge herself. I started her out as a
puppy doing this though, and she learned early on that there was no
competition for her food, and she didn't have to overeat, etc.

So it is possible that you can just fill up a bowl and let the dog eat when
she's hungry. This can vary from dog to dog though, some will eat eat eat
and keep eating until the bowl is finished. Vets generally suggest an eating
regiment for your dog regardless...so maybe you're better off just doing
that.

How much to feed your dog from that point on becomes trial and error. Just
watch her weight and vary the amounts depending on if she's gaining or
losing weight. Eventually you'll find the right amount that keeps her at her
ideal weight.
