I don't know the whole story, but Catholics do tend to have a lot of statues 
of saints and they pray to saints. I can certainly see how someone might 
construe that as worshipping idols.

I was told by a strong Catholic girl that they pray to saints because "the 
saints are closer to God than regular people."
