I agree I think we just state things slightly different. It's not up to the
automotive industry to stop selling gas guzzlers, it's up to us to be willing
to pay a little more for more fuel efficient versions of the vehicles we like.
Then the auto industry will provide more of them (supply and demand). But most
people see more benefit in saving a few dollars on the purchase of the gas
guzzling version. Likewise if we would keep our vehicles a year or two longer
then the additional cost of more fuel efficient vehicles could be better
amortized over the longer period of time.

Buy a SUV for $30,000 use it for three years and trade it for $15,000 ( 50% of
orginal value) towards a new vehicle. Average cost of ownership per year is
$5,000 plus maintenance, gas etc..

Buy a more fuel efficent model for $35,000 trade it in after 4 years for
$15,000 and your average cost of ownership is the same $5,000. But you have
been kinder to the environment and have spent less in gas. (prices for used
vehicles drop a smaller percentage each year. hence the ability to sell it for
$15,000 (42.9% of original value) after four years. Plus after 12 years you
have bought 3 cars rather than 4, again benefiting the environment and natural
resources etc...
