Most of Western Afghanistan is currently not being covered by coalition forces, also there has been a large upswing in suicide attacks lately, which most Afghans think is a sin, so it must be from an influx of foreign Jihad fighters. We found some people from Chechnya and Pakistan when I was there, but for the most part it was local fighters. So the arrival of foreign fighters coming in through Pakistan in problematic.
Now it is no where near as bad as Iraq, and he bigger towns and cities, and anywhere else that the coalition regularly operates is doing damned well. Something else that has changed since I was there, was that the insurgents are now going after Afghanis more and more, also following the current tactics being used in Iraq. I am personally of the opining that there has to be a third party country somewhere that is being used as a host country for training and indoc. Probably in Pakistan's western tribal areas. The TTPs (Training, Techniques, and Procedures) are too similar. -- Tim Heald [EMAIL PROTECTED] 703-300-3911 -----Original Message----- From: Robert Munn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, March 13, 2006 8:24 PM To: CF-Community Subject: Re: Foolhardy US Posturing on Iran by Bolton Hehe, every once in awhile I stop and think things through. I don't know if it's a good idea to be doing anything else, I think it's a bad idea. Overall, what are the options? I have no idea, and I don't think anyone in charge does either. We can keep going down the UN road, but that is almost guaranteed to fail. We can just let them get nukes and concentrate on containment, but I don't think Israel will ever settle for that plan. Their entire existence is at stake. So basically the whole situation sucks. I don't think that our goals are always altruistic, but I think overall as a country (public and private) we do a decent job of balancing things out. I disagree about Iraqis not wanting to be liberated. The Shiites and Kurds have wanted out from under the thumb of the Sunnis forever. I really don't know about Afghanistan either but my impression is that things have been more successful, but more limited, than in Iraq.
