El is a divine name and a standard ending on many names of Malachim (messengers, also translated to angelos and angels through the greek). Judith'll post on Kalel being any sort of word. The creators may have been shooting for him to be angelic or divine in stature or ability but he wasn't in the beginning. He originally could only leap far distances, not fly. And he wasn't all goody-goody either. That came later.
