Just steam of consciousness here, but it reminds me of His Dark Materials.

This dude in the books is war buddies with an Armored Bear.  They get
separated and the guy makes a last stand killing a whole platoon and
preventing some bad events from unfolding.  The bear hunts for days
for his buddy and finally finds him dead.  He pieces together the
heroism his friend had displayed and, to honor him, he eats him for
sustenance as he is going to continue the fight.  By eating him in
this way, so does his friend.
