I don't use gmail. I have gotten to a point where I don't really like google at all.
I'm not worried about email itself, when it comes to identity, if I were, I wouldn't host my own server with a DNS name with publicly available information. In google's case they come out and say they are going to read the email you send and receive and can use that information for improving gmail or other google services.
