So with the Lieberman stuff happening I did a lot of reading this
weekend and have a new position on Iraq which is blend of my old
position and the Murtha position:
(1.) Up troops to 450,000+. The could be accomplished with a
combination of any of the following: US troops, mercenarys, NATO
troops, private security, etc. Why?
1.1) We need to lock down the border.
1.2) We need to hold territory we've spilled American blood to win.
1.3) We need to ensure maximum security for the entire country.
(2.) Build the democracy from the ground up. Tim said it better than
I could so I won't re-cover it, but we need the talent to start town
and regional democracy that will eventually *roll up* to national
elections.
(3.) Set a deadline to leave. WHAT? OMG! WHY??
(3.1) Same reason republicans set a deadline with Welfare:
motivation. When people know there's an end to subsidization it
typically motivates them to step up. But how can this work you ask?
(3.1.1) We need to deliver the Iraqis a better life and
better future. 50,000 Iraqis have died since the US invaded and the
country is careening towards civil war. That is NOT a better life,
not a secure life, and not a life I'd want to invest in. I'm sure
they don't either.
If we can deliver REAL security for solid set of
time, Iraqis will see democracy and the law as a guarantor of their
security. They'll invest in those institutions and therefore they'll
have something to lose.
Once they have something to lose they'll be VERY
motivated to provide their own security especially if the US says
they'll pull out.
BOTTOM LINE: Essentially Bush's policy has been a total failure and
saying that "we're staying" is more stubborn than strategy. It's time
to develop a winning strategy and I think what's above is it.
