We did something similar with MacGregor, he'll almost do it on command
now. We're having to housebreak Finnegan, because he was a stray.
His bad habits are rubbing off somewhat on Mac...

Our dogs sleep with us, We only crate when we're not at home.

Thank god for our carpet cleaners

I agree with thuse of one word for "potty time"

I used "go potties" for the igs and it works. When I first housetrained
Spike, I stood outside for however long it took until she did something.
We didn't play, I wouldn't pet her, or pay any attention to her other
than to keep telling her to go potties. I didn't care if it was pouring
or cold or 2 o clock in the morning. We did this about every 2-3 hours.

Today she'll sit by the door when she needs to go. Getting her playmate
Lucy, to follow suit has been a bit of a challenge, but they are
typically on the same schedule.

As for crate training, I recommend that as well. At night, the igs sleep
in a crate with a litter box. There is only enough room for them to
sleep. So they won't go where they are sleeping. They are very used to
it and cuddle up with one another.

With his barking/whining, put him to bed with a peanut butter filled
kong, that has been frozen. Should keep him occupied long enough to let
you go to sleep. By then perhaps you wont hear him and feel sorry for
him. Eventually he'll stop. It's putting up with until he does that's
hard. LOL!

He's just a puppy and he's lonely. :)
