I would like to see real facts backing up how getting the US involved in Iraq
helps keep terrorism out of the US.

Afghanistan - intelligent us of the US Military. Helped to quell terrorism.

But what did Iraq have to do with terrorism?

Mean, terrible, dictator that killed his own people and spouted a bunch of
rhetoric that he couldn't back up and hated Bush. All true. But Pakistan
supports terrorism more than Iraq. There could even be an argument that Saudi
Arabia supports terrorism more than Iraq did.

Going into Iraq made no sense and now we are paying the price in blood, lives
and debt that will last decades.

I don't know if attacking Iraq was an effort at a quick victory (like the Gulf
War) in order to get the news away from the fact we weren't able to find Bin
Laden.

Or if as some people contend that Bush wanted a regime change in Iraq no matter
what and was able to mix fact and fiction to produce just enough plausiblity to
gain support for the war by stating that you are with us or against us.

see Goering's take on getting citizens to fight for you

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the
country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the
people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament,
or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be
brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell
them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of
patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
