Story time...

I remember when I first got my Masters degree from Strayer; nobody at work
knew about it because I opted not to have them pay for it (long story).
Anyway, we were in a big meeting one day when some jack-ass started making
derogatory comments about online schools and how no good company should hire
people with online degrees, yada, yada. He sat there for about 30 minutes
going on and on. Then a couple "uppers" joined in the bashing. Meanwhile, I
had just rolled out two new applications that danced circles around anything
previously done before I showed up, so I felt the need to chime in... and I
did. I was on the verge of going ape shit as I found the comments and
attitudes WAY out of line.

The problem is that the online/distance learning is relatively new and many
old-school people have a hard time realizing its value is no less than a
traditional education (it's all about what the student puts into it). I
opened my remarks to the jack-ass with.. "Hey Dave, I got a BS in Computer
Science from Alfred University and an MS in Computer Information Systems
from Strayer University... and look, we are both sitting at the same table
for the same shitty company who shouldn't hire people with degrees from
online schools... what kinds of contributions have you made since you got
here?". That put the big kibosh on that nonsense.
