You don't need any software if you just want to multi-boot - but it is best
to dedicate a partition to each OS.

If you want to run them at the same time then you'll need some
virtualization software.

I use MS Virtual PC (VPC) - since you're talking about only MS OSes then
it's probably a good choice for you as well. (You can install other OSes in
VPC as well - but there are special capabilities available for Windows
OSes).

The other option is VMWare. It's really just as good. There are
differences in management styles between the two options but they're really
more alike than different.

The main difference is that VPC is free (although you'll still need to have
licenses for the OSes you install):

I love it - makes running multiple OSes for testing, playing and whatnot so
much simpler.

Note that you do need quite a bit of PC: remember that the virtual machine
runs on top of your host OS: you'll need enough RAM and processor for BOTH
(although if you have a surplus you can run as many OSes at the same time as
your RAM and proc can support).

The virtual machine "hard disks" are just plain files - you can archive,
copy, move, etc them to any machine running VPC. It's great to be able to
set up a test OS, work with it at home then throw it on a USB hard disk and
take it to work.
