Your basic memorization allows you to extrapolate that given 12x12 =
(12x10 + 12) + 12 = 144  then it follows that, using your method, 12 x
13 = 144 + 12 right?

so then 13 x 13 = (144 + 12) + 13 and so on.

that's the benefit of rote memorization.

creative solutions like 'round-robin distribution'--handing an apple
to each kid in succession until you are out of apples and/or you have
an even distribution--are valid answers for my kids' math program, but
writing out 12 (apples) / 4 (kids) = 3 apples/kid is not a "valid"
solution as it focuses on facts rather than 'number literacy'.

....sigh...

So I don't rely on the school to give the children an adequate math
base. That is up to me.
