Observing this thread has increased my appreciation of my youngest son's public school first grade education including math. They are teaching math using a variety of methods, including memorization. As I understand it, under the theory that different kids learn in different ways.
I must say trying to help my son, who is mildly learning disabled, learn math has given me a great appreciation for good teachers and that I would make a very poor one.
