"I don't think the government should be involved."

The government is already involved. It is a Public University, funded
in part by tuition and fees and a lot of government money. What
faculty and staff retire, they are part of the government retirement
plan.

Now, I don't want thought police in the classroom monitoring
professors. Ideally, the university would police itself. If students
complain that a prof isn't teaching, the university should
investigate. If true, then they should urge him or her too. If
complaints continue, they should take harsher actions. If they do not
take action, then it would be the job of State to hold someone in the
administration accountable.

"Let's take the smoking bans. I agree that restaurants are very nice
being smoke free, but I don't think the government should mandate it."

I couldn't agree more. One difference. Ninety-nine point nine
percent of restaurants are privately owned.

"Universities should be free to create whatever educational value
proposition they like and consumers should be free to choose."

Let me give you an example of why I disagree with this. Suppose a
professor at a college says he has the perfect solution to the
problems in the Middle East. This professor says there should be
another holocaust and all of the Jewish people in Israel and the world
should be executed. Suppose people complain but the college does
nothing about it. As much I would like this to be a fictional story,
it is not. There was a professor at a college here in NC who said
this. The professor even created a class about the subject. This
professor actually trained with some militant Islamic groups. The
college was a small private school so the State really has no say in
the issue. If it were a State college, I it would be the state's duty
to calm the rhetoric in my opinion. State employees should not be
allowed to say crap like that.

"So, then, in your system, who determines what is political speech?
What criteria do they measure by?"

It's not my system. I have no idea. Your questions form the most
difficult process if something like this were instituted. In the case
above, I believe it is pretty obvious. In others, it would almost be
impossible to decide. In some parts, professors are hired because of
their opinions. For example, a university decides to hire a new
economics professor because his opinions and ideas about the economy
are new and revolutionary. You would expect him or her to use this
opinions in class. However, I do not believe many university hire
professors to talk about exterminating a whole race of people.

I am not pro censorship. I just want stuff like I mentioned above and
the example the other Jerry mentioned stopped when they happen at
State supported schools.
