To scientists, the evolutionary precursor to the chicken came first, layed an egg with a genetic mutation that resulted in the birth of a chicken like being. As time and evolution went on, this beings children, still being born of eggs, became more chicken like. So if we limit ourselves to the end result of the chicken or the egg, the egg has to be the answer as the entity that layed the egg was not a 'chicken'. Still, it would probably fry up mighty tasty. :)
