Ok, 1) when you bring kitty home isolate him/her in one area of the house for a week or two, let the dog smell the cat's scent but not get near her. The cat is the unknown quantity here.
2) after about a week or two let the cat out to roam, just make sure she can get back to where ever you had her isolated, this will become the cat's "safe place" 3)Put the cat's litter box in the safe place, cats rarely have "accidents", if they to their thing outside of the litter box there's a reason for it. Invest in good litter and a covered litter box, it'll keep the "damn" factor down. 4) Do not put the cat's food near the litter box, they won't eat where they poop. 5) cats are pretty independent, make sure they have plenty of food and water, when you go away and they'll be fine 6) get plenty of cat toys, one's that they'll play with on their own and ones that you play with them with, cats do bond to owners, playing with the cat will reinforce this. It also keeps them out of trouble. 7) Invest in a good, tall cat tree. This'll give the cat a place to get away, scratch and sleep.
