>Claws are harder. We got him a scratching thing and he does use it

One scratching post is seldom enough. Cats are supremely lazy and they simply
will not go far to scratch if there is something perfectly useful nearby. ;-)
When I first got my cat, I had scratching posts in just about every room of the
house. Now that he's older and fully trained, I can get away with a lot
fewer...it's that first year or two you have them where it really helps to just
put stuff to scratch on EVERYWHERE. It's a pain I know, but it really does
work.

Wow, good thinking. That's unusual for them to scratch wood like that. But
again, if that's where he sleeps, they naturally like to stretch and scratch
when they wake up, so may have been due to that...or a male cat marking his
territory.

That can be tough, since he's not really scratching, just climbing. If you can
provide a post that is high enough nearby though, that might help. You might
need to take the curtains down temporarily for that to work.

LOL, my cat will only use the toilet if the bowls go dry. However, he has a
typical Maine Coon trait which is playing in the water. So I had to get special
bowls that have a lip on them to prevent spills. He still manages to splash
water out, but not as bad.
