I tried explaining it to the tech that I got along these lines:

Me: "I'm trying to set up my network here at home so I can connect to
it from somewhere else. Like Starbucks. I want to be able to connect
to my network from Starbucks. I know the server is set up right, I
need to know if Verizon blocks any ports that would keep me from doing
this."

Him: "Uhm, we will need to call Starbucks and find out if there is
anything you need to do special."

Me: "No, it does not matter where I am connecting from, I need to know
if there is something on Verizon's service stopping me from connecting
in."

Him: "So you need me to help you diagnose your wireless connection?"

I swear, I felt like I was talking to an Eliza with a light Indian accent!
