Yeah, I've been seeing a move to diesels lately. Just take a look at the new Honda Civic iCDTi. The iCDTi is just a super efficient diesel car kinda along the lines of the old Honda Insight. They are acutally having a hypermiler shootout between a generation II Prius and the iCDTi. You can check it out here: http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9121. There are some pretty amazing MPG ratings there!
As for the new VW, I see that becoming more of an option, particularly in Europe where diesel is more widely accepted and is lower in price than standard unleaded gas. What I think will likely happen here are fully electric cars with a small'ish engine that only runs to charge the battery. This would allow the engine to run at it's optimum rpm with little load while the MG(s) actually move the car, which should lead to MPG ratings in the hundreds of miles per gallon.
