You should be able to get away with really (no REALLY) blanking your current drive. Eliminate all partitions (including the likely hidden one) and rebuild the master boot record. There are boot-level (floppy disc) tools that will do this I used to have to do this all the time when switching an old laptop from Linux to Windows and back - the Linux bootloader (LiLo) would need to be manually wrenched out to install windows. I'm assuming that Dell hasn't actually don something stupid with the system BIOS (ala Apple)... but I can't see how/why they would. My guess is that they've customized the bootloader and that's it.
