However there are a lot of commonalities that allow for group generalizations, people who are clinically depressed for instance tend to endorse more irrational, catastrophic and negative beliefs than non depressed people. There is a very common set of habitual thought patterns that are characteristic of depression. Teaching people to actively combat these patterns results in their not being depressed. Moreover these thought patterns are associated with elevations of various neurotransmitters that are found in clinical depressions. These elevations are no longer evident following Cognitive Therapy.
