I think the nation of today is beyond anything the founders could have conceived, and their opinions, much like the Bible, are only quoted for the convenience when the speaker is at a lost for empirical evidence with which to prove a point. The government, for generations, has taken our money and distributed it according to arbitrary and capricious desires of the petty tyrants and corporate overlords.
If I must pay taxes, as it appears I must, I would rather the money go to feed the hungry and aid the sick and needy, than to oil company profits, weapons manufacturers and war mongers. I am much more concerned about preserving my first amendment rights, than some possibly violation by congress of the tenth amendment. The states have proven themselves incompetent to manage even those programs over which they exercise control. Draconian drug laws, the abysmal failure of education, the decrepitude of intra-state infrastructure, etc, etc.. ad nauseum, ad infinitum.
