I don't know if the shooter was a law-abiding citizen before they drove by and shot up the restaurant where my son and his lady were dining, but they certainly were not law-abiding at the time of the shooting. My information on gun usage comes from working on proposals for anti-gang funding in California. Most of the guns seem to be obtained legally at one point, then illegally transferred to the gangs.
As for needing assault weapons when "the shit hits the fan", what exactly do you think is going to happen that would require you to use an assault weapon on someone? Civil War?
