As I replied to Mary Jo: the last time I set up an iPod (last Christmas) it
didn't appear at all optional. To upgrade the firmware or register the
device it seemed like I had to install iTunes.

In that case (an iPod Nano) it didn't appear as a system device until I
installed iTunes and it went through a set-up program.

Whole experience really set my jaw against the iPods (I've never really like
iTunes, but I've always appreciated the hardware).

Of course this is true (and you can slap me for that): any non-drm'd stores
(and in my opinions the bests ones - Amazon, Amie Street, etc - work just
fine with the iPod.
