Anything will 'glide' for a little while, if it is going fast enough!  
Ok so maybe that would be more correctly called 'ballistic' but it still 
moves stuff through the air.

But reading a bit into the some of the witness reports, it sounds like 
it was may have already been gliding and just did not have enough umph 
to get to where the pilot hoped to get.

A related incident I remember from some years ago, a large military 
plane went down in a community, a B1 IIRC, at least some kind of large 
'flying wing' type air craft is what I have in my memory's eye.  What I 
recall from the news was that the pilots chose to ride the plane to the 
ground so that they could guide it to miss a school.  They succeeded by 
just enough.
