A few other things. I live on the little white curve of a line above the
flight path, right above the G in Governor Drive on the map. That's how
close I was and I didn't make note of the plane when it passed directly
overhead. Also, there is a plant nursery right on the other side of the 805
from Governor Drive. Apart from that, I think the area is uninhabited until
you reach the tarmac at the base. Lastly, the canyon at the crash site is
maybe 1000 feet wide with a train track running east-west through the middle
of it and a north-south bridge over it less than 1/2 mile to the west. There
just isn't anywhere else to go.

As Cameron pointed out yesterday, there have always been questions about the
safety of the base with so many houses nearby, and lots of people figured
something like this would happen sooner or later, so the question for the
community is what happens now. Some folks would like to make it a commercial
airport, but that's no safer and a lot noisier. Others want to shut the base
down and sell the land to developers. It would be very valuable land, but it
might take years to give the all-clear to actually allow people to live on
it,. Given that it has been a military base for decades, who knows what's
over there. I don't think there is significant unexploded ordinance, since
it is an airbase, but someone would have to check it out and make sure. What
happens ten years from now if some little kid finds a live bomb and gets
blown up? No easy solutions to the problem.
