As the father of a teenage daughter, I can tell you that no matter how well you do as a parent, kids are still going to be kids and do things that they are not supposed to, if for no other reason than to test the boundaries, and most importantly see if you are even really paying attention. I first made sure that my daughter knew that I was and always be her father first, then I worked on the dad part second (I got this from a shirt my daughter gave me on fathers day once, Anyone can be a father, but only someone special can be a dad). Anyway, although my daughter has made her share of mistakes, she is finally getting her shit together and is figuring out that although doing the right thing is not always the easiest thing initially, it pays dividends in the long run. I never did do the 'if you hurt my daughter I will kill you 15 different ways' thing, I did make sure that I met the little fuckers so I can get a read on them to see just how much of a piece of shit they really are (I don't trust anything with a dick around my daughter, no matter who they are). I would be nice to them though if for no other reason than to show my daughter that I can and will take the higher ground. But I made sure that she knew I did not trust them at all. And yeah, she picked some real losers, one of whom is about to know what it is like to meet a father who is pissed off at him as soon as I get home, but she has finally figured out how to pick a good one now. But at the end of the day, all you can do is hope that you did a good job and your kids turn out to be good adults who are making a positive contribution to society.
