You are right. Islam is only 1,400 or so years old. Still young in religious terms.
As for painting a whole religion, look at the laws about honor killings in Jordan. In Pakistan. In countries where it should be murder but is instead "defense of the vitality of Islam". Look at how Sharia - Islamic law treats abuse of women. The same Shaira that is being exported to non-Muslim countries. I'm not making the argument that it can not move past its violence. I'm making the argument that there needs to be effort to do so. Effort from the inside. If a law says beat or murder another and that law is used to actually beat or murder someone then the person doing it is wrong. When a law says beat or murder another and is used by lots of people then we've got a problem with the law.
