NPR had a great series on health care in Europe last summer. I suggest that it reading and listening to the series may help everyone in understanding some of the issues and the comparisons with different health care systems.

Its possible that a mix of mandatory private insurance through an association, be it employer related, professional, neighbourhood or state level, could be a far better fit for the US. Everyone gets a certain minimum level of coverage, then depending on your health care association you get more and or more comprehensive care. >> Seems a bit like the lipstick on the pig Larry mentioned.
