HA! Smart arse. Funny you should mention that though ...

a few years back 2 houses in our neighborhood got hit with lightening
twice in a month - the same houses. One was ours.

The first time for us wasn't bad and it may have just been near our
house, but it blew out our cable modem and router.

The second time ... I was in the living room reading a book. It has a
wood burning fireplace that I could see out of my peripheral vision,
but there was no fire at the time.

All of a sudden there was a blue ball of fire in the fireplace with
electrical arcs shooting out to the sides like in terminator and then
an explosion that was like 2 times louder than a shotgun next to you.

The EMP from the thing blew out every piece of electronics in our
house except our microwave and sony TV. 2 laptops down, backup
drives, routers, hubs, laser printer, irrigation system, everything.
If it had electronics it got fried.

No this wasn't surge-protectable because things that weren't even
plugged in were toasted.

But, my Dell XPS with RAID came up in BIOS and said the disks were 99%
corrupted - but it rebuilt them! Took like 4 hours. But I got back
all my pictures, video, music, et al. now we burn to DVD important
stuff.

Anyway, in our bedroom the electricity came through the wall via an
unused cable jack, arced across to a fan cord and found ground through
the outlet. But not before it melted the fan motor, cord, some
carpet, and blew out the electrical socket.

It was hardcore dude.

We faired better than our neighbors though who had all that but also
got a hole blown in their roof.

No fires, thank God.

But now I'm considering lightening rods.
