Now: secret ballot if employer asks (I think) With new Bill: Secret ballot only if 30% sign their name on a petition. Not sure how the unions are on the left coast but on the right coast you don't let the union know you went against them.
I got a call when I was 16 working at Nathans because I asked why part timers pay union dues but only full timers get benefits. They called my boss, a good friend of mine, and told him to tell me they know where I live and all my family members. I also had a friend in high school who grew up to be a union goon.
