Yeah, fair enough.  I just type what I know - or think :)
Conversation, like you said.

I'm not trying to write dissertations, white papers, articles, or
formal works of any nature; just typing what comes off the top of my
head since I do enough of the formal stuff as a job.

And those factors:

* more than a awareness of existence

* willingness to type a combination of knowledge, thoughts, and
conjecture - casual conversation

* limitations of email, but information on the computer screen

Freaks some people out.

For them, it seems to abruptly move the discourse from casual
conversation to proofs; they think you SHOULD be an expert and
therefore expect that what you're writing should be some type of
authoritative formal work.

It's kind of odd to me, but then we're all different and have
different expectations.
