But that's just it - do you know what they're trying to do? Do you
what they're protesting? Neither of us do.

At first it was a protest over the election of a mostly feeble PM
role; it's the Supreme dude that controls all of the military and the
rest of country.

Now it looks like they may be protesting against that Supreme dude but
do they just want a new supreme dude or do they want a new system?

And this mousawi guy was one of the original leaders of the purge and
still has a seat on its council! Is that guy a huge win even if his
role is more powerful than the existing one?

You're making a BUNCH of huge assumptions and none of them pass the sniff test:

(1.) We don't know what's going on

(2.) We don't know what the Iranians what.

(3.) We have horrific history with the people, the country, and the region

(4.) We don't know who to support (musawi, rafsanjani, other?)

(5.) We have no idea what effect our saying something beyond what's
been said will have.

So the DATA-DRIVEN answer is to speak out broadly (as Obama has - read
his speeches) and then watch and wait.

It's kind of egotistical to think beyond that in my opinon.
