No wait! and I hate to call you wrong -- but I get what he is saying ...

And it's a huge pet peeve of mine.

Everyone is picky about the mechanic, the carpenter, the people that install
their carpets. They spend MONTHS researching what car to buy, what color
paint to use in the baby's room, which TV is the best fit for the family ...

But when it comes to a doctor, they pick the first name in the book, make
and appointment and go. They don't research them. They don't interview them.
They don't ask for referrals from friends and family. Because we've NEVER
BEEN TOLD WE COULD!!! It NEVER crosses their minds. They go to who is
convenient, yet they will drive 2 hours to go to a particular electronics
store to purchase tech because they like how that stores treats it's
customers.

That's a REAL big freaking PROBLEM!!!!! PEOPLE COME ON!!!! You ARE A
CUSTOMER OF THE DOCTOR! Not just a patient. Just because the insurance
company pays, doesnt mean you arent a CUSTOMER!

Seriously. When was last time any of you (I know there will be a few -
because you people are intelligent) interviewed a health care practitioner
before you entrusted your sacred health and body to their care???

I drive 2 hours down into Atlanta to see an endocronologist because *I* know
he takes an interest in my well being, listens to me attentively for as long
as I need, and will take into consideration how I feel not just what lab
reports say. It took 4 Dr's before I found him. The others could of cared
less. They couldn't rush me out of their office fast enough and one of them
was only a short distance away.

I called a dozen doctors before I picked a general practitioner and if they
wouldn't answer my short list of general questions before I made an
appointment, then I didn't even try to saee them. In the end, I found the
perfect fit. Someone that doesnt rush you out ofter 10 minutes and doesn't
prescribe a pharmaceutical immediately just because they get kickbacks from
the drug comapnies. I got real lucky with her too because she's only 10
minutes away. :)

I drive an hour and a half to go to a dentist I know and trust even though
there's 2 dozen of them up here. This guy is reasonable, is interested in
the best decisions for me, and doesnt just create work for the sake of a
paycheck.

Where does this all count??

If the doctor 30 minutes away doesnt listen to me, doesnt take carefully
weigh all my symptoms or take a vested interest in getting me well ... then
I get sicker. Therefore costing the health insurance companies even more
money (or in this case my hubby's employer since they are self insured). I
get sicker, my quality of life gets worse, etc. We can see where this leads.
All because I was too lazy to do due diligence on my health care provider.

Don't you see that? That's where his analogy is coming from ... has nothing
to do with commodities versus health care. It's about how ridiculous most of
America treats their bodies and health.
