As a situation I am sure many of you are familiar with. I am the first
choice computer technical support for family. Primarily my father who
lives an hour north of me.

Trying to visualize what he is seeing and doing as well as giving clear
instructions by verbal descriptions alone is quite challenging and often
frustrating. Many times his questions could be simply answered if I
could see his desktop. Does the Windows Remote Desktop tool allow
this? I use it frequently to access servers remotely at my day job.
But I have never before needed to know if it shares the visual desktop
with somebody sitting in front of the system, or if it logs in as a
separate account in a multi-user fashion. In other words, if I could
connect to his desktop with Remote Desktop would I see the same view
that he is seeing on his monitor?

If it does, how difficult is it to set up Remote Desktop to connect two
personal computers over the wild internet through two DSL routers, one
at my end and one at his. Luckily we actually have the same routers
from by the same internet service provider so what works for me should
be exactly the same for him.

Finally is this a really dumb idea? Will we just be opening his
computer, if not both of ours, for a world of hurt by opening them up to
remote desktop connections even if they are properly secured,
firewalled, and virus scanned?
