"Mr. Jobs, online music is going to be a multi-billion dollar business and a cleverly designed device in this space will be a profit leader for our company. Should we make that device or not?" Obviously, Scott, that never happens. Great leadership is great judgment given imperfect or missing data. But let's review the 2 general types of leaders: "master operators" and "visionaries": Master Operators -------------------------- e.g., Jack Welch. These guys and gals are operations data driven people. Think TPS/Deming type stuff: fix the process. These are guys like Judah: they love data and they don't like to make decisions without charts and graphs. The difference between operators and master operators is knowing WHAT to gather data on. In the iPod example, a master operator would ask for trends analysis on what, say, college students are spending their time on. Or look at the napster space for example. Visionaries ------------------------- e.g., Steve Jobs. These guys are vision driven people. They are creatives who use their connection to people and information to foresee future events, products, et al and then create it/account for it. The difference between dreamers and visionaries is, of course, the accuracy and success of their vision and the ability to make it happen. In the iPod example, Jobs, of course, foresaw a consumer electronics boom centered around media. Very few are good at both, but some are like Warren Buffet. There was plenty of data AND conceptual analysis for a good leader of any type to be concerned about Bin Laden in Jan 2001. Unfortunately for us Bush is not even a decent leader of any type. He thinks leadership means being "the decider". Only idiots (and shitty leaders) think that. Leadership means knowing which questions to ask and who to listen too whether that be through data or concepts. Bush didn't understand that and that's why he and his team failed to protect us on 9/11. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Want to reach the ColdFusion community with something they want?
