Well, if you believe Bin Laden (and there is good reason not to), the primary issue was the stationing of Christian/Western troops in the holy lands in Saudi Arabia. That, from what I understand, is considered to be the issue that spawned the current movement. Combine that with the US support for the Shah in Iran and you have a rough idea of the early events that helped make the situation what it is today. Of course it would also be helpful to go back to the partitioning of the middle east after WWI and then again after WWII. But that is more like a background issue rather than something that is actively being promoted as a causus belli.
