Something to consider. Before it was shut down by Newt Gringrich in the 90's the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment looked at the impact of the space program on the US Economy. From what I remember, every dollar spent on space exploration brought back into to the economy something like $15 or $20. Moreover they estimated that because of the space program the US was about 40 years in advance to where it would have been without NASA. So I'd say we got our money's worth out of the program.
