There is a competing company - Dish Network.

I understand the need for competition, or more importantly, the need
not to have monopolies, but at what expense? How many startups would
be able to afford the satellite access, or launching their own
satellite? (I have no idea if either Dish Network or DirecTV launch
their own satellites - but I guess its a possibility)

There used to be 2 competing satellite radio companies, Sirius and XM,
and they were allowed to merge.

I have had fewer issues with DirecTV in almost 6 years than I had with
Adelphia for 6 months (who we left to go to DirecTV). Maybe we are the
exception to the rule, who knows. But I am more than satisfied with
DirecTV.
