Much more than a thousand. Just the initial application for a green card is 
over $1000 last I checked. The fees run from over $2300 for a vanilla type 
application. Add on $1000 for a premium processing fee (so you don't wait up to 
4 years), $605 for a Naturalization Decision Hearing - if you need such. There 
are a lot of other filing fees that may apply as well. For instance if you're 
currently in the country when applying, you have to pay an additional $545 to 
waive the foreign residency requirement.
